Summer in the South Part 3

At Art of the Mix, I wrote this, because there are no better words to sum up this series:

About the mix: Because summertime in the South calls for Jazz. It sounds better at night, with just a porch light on so you can see while you sit in the dark having a low toned conversation or pondering whatever mystery haunts you…Jazz in the summer is also slow dancing and singing along. You never know when the moment will strike you. It’s about love and romance and breakups and heartbreak. It can mean heart break or a new love. It always means late nights and cigarettes. Jazz just feels like summer. Summer in the South can be magical.

Really, though, I don’t need the porch light. The dark is just fine by me.

It’s one of those meme things…(isn’t that what they are called?)

In keeping with the name

I’m feeling absolutely random:

It’s 9:02 a.m. and someone keeps sending me a text message that’s got some kind of voice message attached to it that my phone can’t play and when I call the number back, whomever it is just giggles. And no, it’s not a number I recognize.

Best quote ever: “Don’t stop…it’s just Jill. I’ll call her back.” Best. Timed. Phone. Call. Ever.

I like bendy straws.

(Seriously, with the text message. Stop already.)

I finished My Friend Leonard this morning and it was as brilliant and moving as A Million Little Pieces. I get it. The guy made it all up. Lied to Oprah. Poor Oprah. (not) So call it fiction and move on. It isn’t like Oprah is the end all be all of book critics. It isn’t like Oprah’s opinion even matters. I’ve had 6 people ask me why I read these books when Frey lied to Oprah. I get irritated, because they aren’t giving brilliance a chance, quote House by saying “Everybody lies” and change the subject.

(Seriously, with the text message. Fucking kids. It’s kids. Crank calling.)

The new Visa commercials about past Olympic moments are fantastic, especially this one, that has always been one of my standout sports memories.

(And hey, if it makes you tear up a little, it’s ok. I do every time I see it.)

I’m full of 30 Rock and West Wing quotes this week.

(insert your name here)…has you on her/his mind all the time…

“Has you on her mind all the time” is my Facebook status because I thought it clever and amusing. A general outpouring of flirtiness and nonsensical humor to let every one know I’m thinking of them even when I’m not. (does that make sense?)

I think we’re over the break-up hump we were in before. We being the collective we, of course. Not everyone has broken up in recent history; some people are still going strong and some people are making a commitment to keep on keeping on. (And some of us just straight need to be committed. You know who you are.)

It’s that commitment to keep on keeping on that’s on my mind. You know what I’m talking about: engagements. In my world, April is baby month, May is break-up month, and June is…well June is special. It’s wedding and engagement announcement month. My mailbox magically starting filling up with engagement announcements on the 1st and all those invites I got back in March? It’s time to start cashing in on those. If I truly wanted to, I could be at a wedding every Saturday afternoon and at an engagement party every Friday night for the entire month of June.

I’ve found the need to move out of the break-up songs phase and into the happier, much more aligned to the mood of the month songs about love. They are handy to have around while wedding planning; sometimes a girl needs a reminder that weddings are declarations of love and not these overwhelming planning events.

Seriously. There are 900 zillion choices for dresses, floral arrangements, invitations, and save the date cards. 900 zillion isn’t an exact number, but it ought to be. There is lots of “Okay, I love this one…” and “But I love this one too…” going on and there’s lots of “what do you mean I have to write vows??” There are themed weddings and cupcake vs. cake debates, and the literal tracking down of the 2 year old, only made 3 times Carolina Herrera black and white wedding gown that was vetoed by the groom over dinner. There’s this general idea that getting married is a good idea but does it have to be such a big process?

Little reminders of love. Sometimes it’s something we all need. Download them here.
